Tension On Liberal Oregon Campus Over Extremist Group That Meets There
From "Tension Fills Liberal Oregon Campus as Extremist Group Intensifies Its Anti-Jewish Message" by Steven Dubois, Associated Press, February 11, 2010

An extremist group that meets at the University of Oregon is causing debate on campus, with some students saying the group makes the university a dangerous place. The group, Pacifica Forum, was founded more than 15 years ago and has fewer than ten core members. Administrators say they feel trapped between the ideal of tolerance and the right to free speech, as they are now debating whether to change school policy on the use of space by outside groups.

The group has gained attention for hosting speakers who question the Holocaust. A meeting in December included a Hitler salute, which prompted protesters to begin attending meetings once largely ignored. The tension escalated last week when someone spray-painted a swastika in the office of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Queer Alliance. Though no Pacifica members are suspected to have painted it, one of its January lectures focused on the symbolism of the swastika. Roughly 100 students rallied Friday before Pacifica's most recent gathering. The students urged the group to leave campus, voluntarily or by university edict.
