- New York University Considers Installation of Lockdown System
From "NYU 'Lockdown'" by: Clemente Lisi, New York Post - New York University (NYU) is considering the installation of an electronic remote lockdown system capable of locking down classrooms and entire buildings in the event of an attack. It would be the first time the system would be used on a school campus. Jules Martin, vice president for public safety at NYU, said the cost of the system will be determined this summer and that the school would test the system in one of its buildings before a decision is made on whether to purchase it. "We want to be able to have options when it comes to securing the university," says Martin. The lockdown system, which would allow a remote user to bolt classroom doors and close and lock doors to buildings, could be installed in each of NYU's 65 buildings in Lower Manhattan; however, the buildings with the highest volume of traffic would have first priority.
NYU is also installing a high-tech public address system in all of its buildings so that it can communicate with students in case of an emergency. The university can already issue warnings to students and faculty through an emergency text messaging system. Its 300 public safety guards are unarmed and are instructed to call the New York Police Department in an emergency.
