Historic Building Revived by Wayne State University Force
From the article of the same title by: Hunter, George, Detroit News
Police officers at Wayne State University in Detroit are turning a historic building into their new headquarters, which will offer improved security. The 33,000-square-foot facility boasts a high-tech dispatch center with 14 computers and three big monitors displaying different angles from cameras installed on the exterior of the buildings. The entire campus is expected to be equipped with security cameras by 2009 and police will be able to focus in on specific areas with one click of a mouse.

Officers also will be able to lock most campus facilities from the dispatch center in case of an emergency. "We can't lock people in, but we can make sure nobody gets into the buildings," said Wayne State Police Chief Anthony Holt. "These are things that campus police forces have to keep in mind ever since the Virginia Tech situation." The department is also replacing its chain-link fence holding area with three holding cells, one each for men, women, and juveniles. The toilets in the cells can only be flushed by remote control so as to prevent criminals from flushing contraband. The new facility also features an electronics repair shop, indoor parking for patrol vehicles, quarters for a K-9 unit, a gym, and an interview room with video and audio capability.
