Syracuse University Takes Steps to Stem Impact of Grade Tampering at Local High School
From "SU to F-M: Verify Grades" Syracuse Post-Standard (NY)
Syracuse University is conducting an investigation into a computer grade-tampering case at a local high school to determine the extent of involvement of students participating in the Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) program that allows high schoolers to earn college credit for taking advanced-level courses. Six seniors from Fayetteville-Manlius High School and two graduates have been charged in the case, which involved the capturing of passwords to gain access to the high school's computer network. Several of the suspects have admitted to altering grades and cheating on AP and SAT exams. At least two of the suspects have taken a SUPA statistics class offered at the high school, and the teacher that administers the course has already made the 58 students who took the course this year retake the course's final exam after finding discrepancies in the grades of four students.

SUPA, with the help of Syracuse University's Public Safety department, is seeking to determine if anyone else participating in the program cheated, altered grades, or accessed copies of the tests on the high school's computer in advance. The university may request that all 250 students who took SUPA courses at the high school this year and last be retested. The district says it will comply with any measures SUPA requires. SUPA offers six courses at Fayetteville-Manlius.
