Two Graduate Students Murdered in LSU Apartment
From the article of the same title by: Cody Brumfield, AACRAO Transcript
Following the murder of two Louisiana State University students in an on-campus apartment last week, university officials moved quickly to notify students using a new emergency-alert system installed in the wake of last year's shootings at Virginia Tech. While the automated voice and email alerts worked flawlessly, a technical glitch led to several thousand text messages going undelivered.

"Some folks who are part of [the SMS] system did not receive a notification by that particular means," university chancellor Sean O'Keefe said at a news conference. LSU had not run a full scale test of the system prior to last week's shootings, although one is scheduled for January 18th when students return from winter break.

According to LSU's web site, the text message emergency alert system is provided by a company called ClearTXT. The CEO of ClearTXT, Doug Kaufman, characterized the glitch as a "misunderstanding” about how “data was to be collected from subscribers." He said ClearTXT employees worked with LSU officials and the "situation has been resolved."

An estimated 30 percent of U.S. colleges are moving to install an SMS emergency alert system to notify students of campus crimes.
