- Cuts Mean No Guards at Augusta State University
From the article of the same name by: Folk, Adam, Augusta Chronicle (GA) - Augusta State University (ASU) will not go forth with its plan to employ part-time security guards after Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue announced that he wanted each one of the state's 35 colleges and universities to present proposals to cut their spending by 5 percent this fiscal year. If the guards had been hired, they would have been tasked with opening and closing facilities on campus and accompanying students to their vehicles at night, two things the university's public safety department is currently responsible for. "If we had security guards, they could relieve the public safety officers to do other things like patrolling," says Kathy Schofe, the director of ASU's public relations department.
