- Technology Forum Focuses on Cybersecurity on Campus
From "Frank Talk About Hacker Attacks, Emergency Notification, and Online Piracy" by: Josh Fischman; Scott Carlson; Jeffrey R. Young, Chronicle of Higher Education - Attendees at the Chronicle of Higher Education's two-day Technology Forum discussed a variety of topics, including network security. Among the speakers on network security was Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis, who discussed how his university handled a series of security breaches that attracted a great deal of media attention in 2006. McDavis noted that before the breaches, Ohio University had a decentralized IT organization and no permanent firewall. Since then, the university has enlisted the help of consultants to hire a new CIO, create a plan of action, and establish a committee that handles IT issues. McDavis added that Ohio University is planning to spend $8 million over the next several years to make sure its information services are stable and secure.
Another topic of discussion at the Technology Forum was the physical security of storage drives and computers, which is increasingly becoming a problem for universities, says Cornell University's Tracy Mitrano. Keeping private student data on physical devices such as USB drives has become a legal landmine for campus administrators. If there is any private data on those drives, worries Indiana University at Bloomington associate general counsel Beth Cate, loss or theft of these devices could amount to an illegal leak of personal student information by the university.
