- AP Poll: Stress Pains Many in College
From the article of the same title by: Alan Fram; Trevor Tompson, Associated Press - Most students at U.S. colleges are pained by stress, with four in 10 students saying they endure it often--and nearly a fifth of them saying they feel stress all or most of the time. The majority of students report such stress symptoms of having difficulty concentrating, sleeping, and finding motivation, with most having been worried, agitated, or too tired to work. Over one-fourth sometimes feel they should reduce their drinking or going out, while one-third sometimes want to use alcohol or drugs to relax, and about one-sixth report having friends who have discussed committing suicide in the past year. Despite these and other signs of stress and other problems, however, about 60 percent of students report being usually hopeful and enjoying life, with half even saying they feel their families understand them. The survey was conducted by Edison Media Research through questionnaires given to 2,253 undergraduates between ages 18 and 24 at 40 randomly chosen four-year schools nationwide. Edison performed the survey for the Associated Press and mtvU, a television network that co-sponsored the poll as part of the "Half of Us" program it runs with the Jed Foundation to raise awareness of emotional problems facing college students.
