- Some Michigan Institutions Prohibit Sensitive Information from Laptops
From "Ferris Data Theft Brings Change" by: Chronicle News Service, Grand Rapids Press (MI)
- Ferris State University in Michigan now bans campus recruiters from carrying applicants' personal information on laptops following the theft of a laptop containing such information from a recruiter's car in late October. Though the laptop did not contain Social Security numbers, driver's license information, or credit card numbers, it did contain names along with addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, e-mail information, and academic data. The device was protected by two levels of user identification and passwords, stress school officials, who have launched a review of all procedures linked to the gathering and storage of student data. "We're changing that policy to ensure that it doesn't happen again," says Ferris spokesperson Marc Sheehan.
Grand Valley State University, following the theft of a flashcard containing the Social Security numbers of 3,000 students in June, launched a training program for recruiters on how to handle sensitive data, which is now kept on the university mainframe and not on laptops. Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC), from whose finance department three laptops containing encrypted information of thousands of employees and students were stolen in 2004, views the incident at Ferris as a reminder of the need to remain vigilant and is reassessing how data is handled. "Every time things like this happen, it's a warning sign that it could happen to you if you're not careful," says Raymond Neff, head of GRCC's Information Technology Department.
