Institutions in New Jersey Establish Own Policies on IDs

Kean University staff and faculty are now required to wear a visible photo ID on campus to make it easier to pinpoint officials with authority during emergencies. Though other postsecondary institutions in the state encourage or even require students, faculty, and staff to carry their ID badges, most do not require that the badges be visible at all times. "Faculty and staff are trusted with the care and well-being of our students," says Kean University spokesperson Stephen Hudik. "In the event of an emergency, it's important to know who's on campus."

At Rutgers, students, faculty, and staff are expected to carry their badges while on campus. "They must possess it and they must produce it when asked," says Sandra Lanman, a spokesperson for Rutgers University at New Brunswick. At Fairleigh Dickinson University's College at Florham, students can be penalized for not having their cards, but not faculty and staff. "Just like every other college, we have unruly visitors," says Provost Ken Greene. "It's really important when we approach students to say, 'Do you belong here? Are you one of ours?'"
