Students Required to Buy GPS Phones

Montclair State University now requires students to purchase GPS-enabled cellphones from Sprint in an effort to improve safety by allowing police to track their whereabouts during emergencies. Students pay $420 a year for the phone, which includes student- activated emergency GPS tracking as well as 50 peak voice minutes a month, unlimited text messaging to any carrier, and unlimited campus-based data usage. "What it does is allow students to have an extra pair or group of people watching over them when they're going from one location to another," says Montclair Police Department Chief Paul Cell.
